Why were the dates of September 3–5 chosen for Naka-Kon 2021?

These were the only 2021 dates available that were not in the first part of the year.  With concerns around vaccine production/distribution,we did not feel the only earlier date in the year was feasible for staff, attendees, and the local community’s safety. We’re hoping that the long weekend gives people time to both enjoy time with their family and attend the convention if possible.

In the announcement, you guys said that there would be limited capacity for the convention - how will that work with people who rolled over tickets? 

Those who rolled over their 2020 membership will have the option to roll over their membership to the new dates of Naka-Kon 2021 (Labor Day) or Naka-Kon 2022 (Memorial Day). We will be reaching out to pre-registered attendees in the month of January 2021 to collect their responses. Once we have that completed, we will then sell the remaining memberships for 2021 Naka-Kon Lite exclusively online. A similar process will be utilized for vendors and artists. We are committed to allowing the maximum number of attendees we can while remaining safe.

I’m a bit hesitant to be excited and buy tickets for something that’s so out of your control. What is your backup plan if it gets close to the Kon date and you have to cancel?

In the event of another cancelation, pre-registered attendees will have the option to roll over their membership to 2022 or request a full refund. We will not plan to reschedule Naka-Kon 2021 to a later date. We are working with Eventbrite to roll out a form shortly for those who already know they cannot attend Naka-Kon 2021 to preemptively roll over to 2022. A similar process will be utilized for vendors and artists. We’re hoping that with the additional lead time afforded by the new dates and being able to observe other events during the year that this will not happen again.

How can you guys say that you’re doing everything you can to make 2021 happen, when you canceled last minute? How can we trust you to do everything you can?

Ever since the pandemic arose in the US , we have been working with our host facilities, the city, and local health departments to make the best decision that protects the health and wellness of our attendees and volunteers. The sudden rise of COVID rates forced us to close for the health of attendees, staff, and the community at large. This is another reason why we postponed Naka-Kon 2021 from March until September.  We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will inform attendees as soon as possible if plans need to be changed. As we all know this is an unprecedented situation in the convention community and the general world around, and we appreciate your flexibility with us as time goes on.

Is 6 months enough time to have an in-person convention and then turn around to plan another one 8 months later for 2022?

With the smaller scale of Naka-Kon 2021, we believe so. This is part of the reason that 2022 is moving to Memorial Day Weekend.

Why was Memorial Day weekend chosen for 2022? Why not keep the convention in March.

With 2021 now scheduled for Labor Day, we wanted to maximize our time to prepare for the next convention. Based on date availability, Memorial Day weekend provided us the most time to prepare with 8 months.

With many other events going on during Labor Day and Memorial Day, how can you ensure you have popular vendors and guests at Naka-Kon?

We’ll be working to sign the best guests and vendors we possibly can. We’re also looking at this as an opportunity to have a more diverse group of guests and vendors.

What do you plan on doing to keep the convention center, staff, guests and attendees safe?

We’ll monitor if other measures need to be implemented in addition to basic hygiene (washing hands, using hand sanitizer, etc) and social distancing. We’re also working closely with our host facilities to ensure thorough cleaning and sanitization. We will continue to monitor local, state, and national guidelines on the pandemic as more things change.

Are there any additional safety requirements to attend Naka-Kon 2021?

All attendees, vendors, guests, and staff will be required to wear masks at all times in convention areas. Safety requirements are subject to change should official CDC guidelines are updated. 

What if vaccines aren’t widely available before Labor Day? What happens then?

We’ll follow the advice of the CDC, government officials, and the event sites on whether to host the event. If the agencies recommend that gatherings should be avoided, we’ll cancel the event with as much warning as we can.

If a vaccine is out, how are you going to police that? Will the vaccine be required in order to attend Naka-Kon?

We can’t collect medical history so we will have to rely on statistics such as reported infection rates and hospital capacity to determine if it is safe.

When will pre-reg and hotel room block open for the Naka-Kon 2021 (Labor Day)?

We currently do not have a firm date on when pre-reg and hotel room block will open. We will continue to communicate closely with the facilities and local health officials and will open pre-reg and hotel room block once all parties confirm that a convention can be held.
